512,241. Magnetic separators. THOMPSON, H. H., DAVIES, A. E., and THOMPSON, M. D. Feb. 25, 1938, No. 5959. [Class 72] In a magnetic separator of the inclined trough type, spaced magnetic bars 11 alternately of opposite polarity are arranged transversely across the bottom of the trough, the bars forming the bases of removable skeleton metal boxes or frames 12 which are filled with foraminous magnetizable filling 16 consisting of a mass of interwoven or intertwined flat steel or iron wire. The boxes &c. 12 are provided with a perforated cover 12 hinged at 14 to one side and retained by catches 15 at the other. Similar boxes or frames 17 of lesser height are arranged between the boxes &c. 12. The lower part of the side of the box away from the flow of the material is not perforated so that the material to be treated accumulates to a certain depth before it can flow out. The foraminous filling may also be formed of a number of strips of perforated metal folded and welded or otherwise secured at the fold to form an elongated fan-shaped member, the edges of the strips being preferably cut through a row of perforations. A magnetic intensifier or armature, such as a steel or iron plate or a flat sheet of interwoven iron and steel with or without a steel plate above it, may be detachably mounted in the trough over the boxes or frames. According to the Provisional Specification, the material formed of strips of perforated metal as described above may be used without the boxes or frames and is placed in contact with the spaced magnetic bars forming pole pieces.
