Abstract

511,848. Separating gaseous mixtures. RUHRCHEMIE AKT.-GES. Feb. 19, 1938, No. 5326. Convention date, Feb. 20, 1937. [Class 1(i)] [Also in Group IV] A modification is described in a known process for recovering acetylene from gases containing it by washing with water, in which process (1) the gas is washed with a restricted amount of water under a pressure of 10-15 atm. and at atmospheric temperature; in order to remove readily soluble impurities, (2) the residual gas is washed with a larger quantity of water at the same temperature and pressure, in order to dissolve the bulk of the acetylene, (3) the pressure on the water used in the second step is reduced to atmospheric pressure in one or more stages, whereby gases less soluble than acetylene escape, together with a part of the acetylene, these gases being recompressed and returned to the second step, and (4) the water, after the third step, is subjected to a reduced pressure not below 30 m.m., whereby acetylene is evolved. In the modified process, a part of the acetylene evolved in step (4) is recompressed, preferably after removal of carbon dioxide, and passed into the water before the latter is subjected to step (3), whereby the elimination of sparingly soluble impurities from the water is promoted, and a purer final product is obtained.
