Abstract
510,750. Optical sound-reproducing apparatus. R. C. A. PHOTOPHONE, Ltd., SINCLAIR, A. T., and BUSH, E. J. May 17,1938, No. 14719. [Class 40 (ii)] Apparatus for reproducing either from " standard photographic sound records or from " push-pull" records alternatively comprises means for altering at will the direction of a light beam modulated by the record, so that when a standard record is in use, the beam may be directed on to an optical device which concentrates the whole beam on a single light-responsive element, or, when the record is of the push-pull type, the beam may be directed on to a beam-splitting device which produces two components and concentrates them separately on different light-responsive elements. As shown diagrammatically in the Figure, light modulated by the record 13 is reflected by a fixed prism 14 on to a movable prism 17 which can be rotated into either of two positions. In that shown, the prism 17 directs the beam through a lens 24, which concentrates the whole beam on the element 22 of the photo-electric cell 23. By rotation of the prism 17, the beam can be directed on to a third prism 18 combined with a beam splitting device 19, 20, so that two component beams are directed separately on to the light-sensitive elements 21, 22, for pushpull reproduction. Specification 450,502 and U.S.A. Specification 2,109,453 are referred to. The Provisional Specification refers to Specification 406,872, and also describes several alternative arrangements. In one of these, a single lens is provided for concentrating the light beam on one light-responsive device, and in its place may be substituted a double prism lens adapted to split the beam into separate beams acting on different light-responsive devices. In another arrangement, a movable shutter, which may have reflecting mirrors &c. mounted thereon, is in proximity to the line of division between the two tracks of a push-pull record, and may be moved when required, to mask one of the light-responsive devices. A further modification consists in providing means such as a tilting lens, prism, &c., to change the direction of the modulated beam as required.
