Abstract

510.460. Fastenings. MALONE, A. J., and THOMPSON, J. A. Feb. 3, 1938, No. 3442. [Class 44] A handle 17 for a vehicle door latch is let into the door and lies substantially flush with the door surface 18, the arrangement being such that one end 26 of the handle can be pressed below the door surface, without the release of the latch being initiated, to raise the other end above the surface to enable it to be gripped, whereupon it can be pulled further out to release the latch. In the arrangement shown, the handle 17 is pivoted at 19 to a spring-biassed lever 20 which has a pin engaging a crank 16 having a lost-motion connection at 31 with the sliding latch-bolt. The initial movement of the handle is swinging about the pivot 19, without affecting the latch mechanism, but when the end 26 of the handle engages the bottom of the recess 30 further pulling out of the handle will operate the mechanism. Operation may be prevented from inside the vehicle by a lever 25 which moves a member 24 behind the end 26 of the handle 17 to prevent it from being pressed in, so that the handle cannot be gripped. A key lock or other means operated from outside the door may be provided to lock the handle in its flush position. In a modification, the end 26 of the handle, after its initial movement bears against the pivot of the lever 20, which may engage the latch-bolt directly. In another modification the handle is pivoted on the bolt, and bears against a fixed pin after its initial movement. In a third form, the handle is mounted on a fixed pivot, and engages the bolt with lost motion.
