Abstract

510,011. Winches; locking levers. STONE & CO., Ltd., J., and HATCHER, E. C. Jan. 25, 1938, No. 2404. [Class 78 (v)] [Also in Group XXIV] A detent device which allows a handle to turn the drum of a winch in either direction but which holds the drum stationary when the handle is released comprises a disc 17, fast on a driven shaft 6, provided with flats 18<1>, 18<2> which form with the inner face 19 of a stationary casing 16 wedge-shaped spaces accommodating balls or rollers 20<1>, 20<2>. These rollers are normally forced by spring-pressed plungers 21 into wedged contact with the opposed surfaces, but any two opposite ones can be pushed away therefrom by two fingers 25 which extend into the casing 16 from a sleeve fixed to the shaft 6 with lateral play and carrying the handle. Fig. 2 shows the shaft 6 held locked against motion in either direction, and Fig. 3 indicates the position taken up by the fingers 25 when the handle is turned clockwise, the rollers 20<1> being pushed into the wider part of their wedge spaces to become ineffective, the rollers 20<2> being effective for stopping only in the anti-clockwise direction. The shaft 6 may drive the drum shaft through double worm gearing, the drum being loosely carried on its shaft but connected thereto by a spring-pressed slotted disc taking over screws projecting from the drum face, the disc being readily movable away by hand to free the drum. In a modification shown the drum is replaced by a pulley to which one end of the rope is attached, the pulley being driven by pinion gearing, and a motor being connected to the finger-carrying sleeve through a centrifugal clutch which allows the motor to speed up before it is connected to the winch mechanism. A oneway adjustable brake is also mounted on the shaft 6 to make motor drive necessary even for lowering a load. The unit comprising motor, clutch and worm-drive can be readily detached and fitted to either end of the shaft 6.
