Abstract
508,969. Skips. SIEMENS & HALSKE AKT.-GES. Jan. 7, 1938, No. 588. Convention date, April 5, 1937. [Class 78 (iv)] A furnace charging skip comprises a pair of jaws 1, 2 which are held closed whilst the skip is suspended by a connection which is releasable to permit their upper edges to move apart under the weight of the charge prior to the full opening of the jaws, so that the charge is deposited more evenly in the furnace. As shown, the releasable connection comprises a suspension hook 6 engageable with pins 3 and 4 on the two jaws. When the skip is deposited on the sole of the furnace, the hook releases the pins enabling the upper edges of the jaws to move apart by an amount limited by an elongated ring 5 encircling the pins. The skip is then opened by the action of lifting cables 12 attached to the outer edges of the jaws.
