[Class 52 (iii)] [Also in Group XV] In a hand device for supporting books for reading consisting, of a two-part framework provided with clamping-tongues which. embrace the cover of the book and are arranged on the upper and lower parts of the framework, the clamping-tongues are arranged to be displaceable laterally. The device includes a lower portion comprising a handle c, a cross-bar a secured thereto, and three rods d, r extending from the bar a. The upper portion of the device comprises a U-shaped hollow tube k<1> having legs k slidably engaging over the rods r, and supporting a U-shaped member i. The rod d passes through a hole in the member i and is provided with a coiled spring q which presses against the member i at one end and against a member m at the other end, the latter member being retained on the rod d by a pin, and engaging over the legs k to act as a guide. A cross-bar l is secured across the upper end of the member k<1>, and is provided with a longitudinal groove f<1> to receive a displaceable clamping - tongue b<1>. A second clamping- tongue b2 is displaceable in a slot f<2> in the cross-bar a. The U-shaped member i has pivoted thereto at each end an arm n which can be swung outwardly to form an extension of the member i, and pivoted to each arm is a further arm o which can be erected perpendicularly to the member i. A leaf-holding means comprises a hollow slotted tube v, a rod v<1 >adapted to slide in the tube and extend from either one end or the other of the tube, the tube being mounted at the forward end of a clamp u pivotally mounted on a pin t. The pin t is carried in a support slidably mounted for movement perpendicularly to the cross-bar a, such movement being effected by an adjusting-screw. A coil spring on the pin t urges the clamp u towards the book. In operation, the upper and lower portions of the device are pressed apart against the action of the spring q, whereby a side cover of a book can be inserted beneath the clamping-tongues b<1>, b2, and the leaf-holder rod v is then engaged over the leaves of the open book. The arms n can then be swung outwardly, and the extension arms o moved to engage under the bottom edges of the book.
