Abstract

508,589. Apparatus for sorting tally cards. COPELAND-CHATTERSON CO., Ltd., and MANN, A. R. Jan. 19, 1938, No. 1822. [Class 106 (i)] Cards having at their upper and lower edges holes which may be slotted out to the edges for manual sorting by means of a needle, are sorted in an appliance comprising a base 1 divided into sections, a removable tray 2 in one section 1b for receiving cards to be sorted, separator elements 5 which are mounted spaced apart in a second section 1c and are movable individually into the tray 2 to divide the cards into groups, means on the first section for assisting the correct insertion of the sorting needle 12 through the upper holes of the cards and of a retaining needle 13 through the lower holes of the cards, and means for holding the retaining needle in position whilst cards are lifted by the sorting needle. Each tally card 6, Fig. 10, has certain holes 8 slotted out to its top edge and all the non-corresponding holes 9 cut out to the bottom edge. The front section 1a of the base is for convenience in placing cards which have been sorted. The cards to be sorted are placed in the tray 2 and pushed towards one end by a slider 3. The rear section 1c has pairs of transverse walls 4 and between each pair slides a separator 5 consisting of a base 19 and two side walls. 18. Desired separators 5 are slid forward by their lugs 20 to separate the cards in tray 2 into convenient groups, each separator passing through a corresponding slot 23 in the rear wall 22 of tray 2 and having a spring 33 which catches in a recess 34. The sorting rod 12 is passed through a desired row of holes and slots in the top edges of the card; a plate 28 upstanding from the base 1 carrying a flange 29 with guide markings for use with rod 12. Retaining rod 13 is passed through the corresponding lower row of holes, also passing through one of the holes 29a in the plate 28 and under those separators 5 which have been advanced. To assist the rod 12 in lifting the cards not slotted out to the edge, a member 14a has hooks 15 of the same spacing as the separators 5. These hooks lift the rod 12 and cards not slotted out in the upper row corresponding to the position of rod 12 and all the other cards are held down since parts 19 and 29a hold the rod 13 down. The member 14a may be hollow to house the rods 12 and 13. To hold the tray 2 in position its right hand end, Fig. 1, is slid into recess 31, Fig. 11, of the base and its left end is held by two turn buttons 30.
