Abstract

507,902. Insecticides. O'KANE, W. C. Nov. 16, 1937, No. 31474. Convention date, Nov. 24, 1936. [Class 81 (i)] An insecticide in the form of a concentrate to be largely diluted with water for use, comprises a giyceride oil, a contact insecticide, a volatile liquid in which the contact insecticide is soluble and which is soluble in the oil, and an emulsifying agent soluble in the other ingredients of the concentrate. The concentrate does not contain any material quantity of water and is preferably anhydrous. Oils speciiied as examples are corn oil, coconut oil, cottonseed oil, peanut oil, lard oil, fish oil, soya bean oil, castor oil, and mixtures thereof; contact insecticides are pyrethrum extract, nicotine base, strychnia, and synthetics such as amines and thiocyanates ; volatile liquids may be aliphatic or 'aromatic compounds, terpenes, chlorinated compounds, esters, oxides or ketones, and higher alcohols, examples being petroleum hydrocarbons, benzene, turpentine, carbon tetrachloride, chlorinated ethylenes, monochlorbenzene, 1.2.4-trichlorbenzene, amyl acetate, dibutyl phthalate, ethyl benzoate; mesityl oxide, pine oil and carbon disulphide; emulsifying agents are " Emulphor A " (Registered Trade Mark), sulphonated olive oil, sodium naphthenate, diglycol laurate, sulphonated fish oil, Albasol, and sulphonated castor oil. The proportion of emulsifying agent is preferably such that the concentrate readily emulsifies in water but gives an unstable emulsion which breaks on application. An example relates to a mixture of corn oil, turpentine, pyrethrum extract and " Emulphor A." Stomach poisons and /or fungicides may also be added to the concentrate, examples being copper zeolite, sulphur, arsenic compounds and fluorine compounds.
