Abstract

507,299. Canning food. PROCTER & GAMBLE CO. Nov. 26, 1938, No. 34418. Convention date, May 23. [Class 49] [Also in Group XVII] Plastic material containing vesiculated gas, such as shortening, is packed in an impervious container so as to nearly fill it at atmospheric pressure, a cover having a small orifice is applied and the container is placed in a partial vacuum. This causes the material to expand, due to the expansion of the vesiculated gas, and to fill the space in the container, the orifice is then sealed. The vesiculated gas may be nitrogen or other inert gas. A covering of parchment paper &c. may beplaced over the material before the air is exhausted. When a can is to be filled, the cover may be applied before the filling, which takes place while the can is inverted, a permanent bottom having. a perforation being attached after filling. In another method, the orifice may be in the side of the can above the surface of the contents.
