Abstract

506,472. Preparing pulp from waste paper; paper. RASSOW, B., and HERFERTH, E. July 25, 1938, Nos. 22058 and 22059. Convention dates, July 24, 1937, and Nov. 15, 1937. [Class 2 (ii)] [Also in Group VIII] Printing-ink is removed from printed paper by reducing the paper to fibre in a washing solution consisting of an aqueous solution of alkali or ammonium pyrophosphate. The solution may also contain other washing agents or adsorption agents. The material obtained may form half the material for the production of new paper. Colouring matter may be added to compensate for the blue shade of the mass produced. In an example, printed newspaper is beaten up with a solution of tetra-sodium pyrophosphate. The liquid containing the printing-ink which has been washed away from the fibres is removed through a sieve. In another example, newspaper waste sheets are mixed with a solution of sodium pyrophosphate in an edge-mill and kaolin is added as an adsorption and loading agent. The paste obtained is added to a weakly acid pulp and worked up into paper. Instead of an edge-mil, there may be used a Hollander, Jordan mill, ball-mill, refiner, rotary boiler, or container with pump installation. Additional washing agents include soaps, soda, and sodium octadecanolmethyl-aminoethanesulphonate.
