Abstract

506,308. Insecticides. ROHM & HAAS CO. June 3, 1938, No. 16653. Convention date, July 23, 1937. [Class 81 (i)] [Also in Group IV] An insecticidal composition contains a nitro substituted diphenyl oxide in association with a powdered carrier, an emulsifying agent or both. The nitro substituted diphenyl oxides may also contain alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl, alkoxy, alkylene, aryl groups or halogen atoms. The compounds may be prepared by reacting a phenol with a nitrochlorobenzene in presence of alkali. In examples: (1) 4-nitro-4<1>-tert.-butyl. diphenyl oxide is prepared from p tert. butyl phenol and p nitrochlorbenzene ; (2) 2 nitro 4<1>- tert.-butyl diphenyl oxide was similarly prepared; (3) alpha, alpha, #, #-tetramethylbutylphenol is reacted with p-nitrochlorbenzene; (4) 2-4- dinitro-2<1>-nitro-4<1>-chlorodiphenyl oxide is prepared from 2-nitro-4-chlorophenol and 2.4- dinitro-chlorobenzene. Dusts may be prepared by dissolving the active ingredients in asuitable solvent, e.g. acetone, mixing with an inert powdered substance such as talc or lime and drying while stirring the powder. Examples are: (1) active ingredient 1 part, talc or lime 98 parts, spreader (cetyl dimethyl ethyl ammonium ethyl sulphate) 1 part, or (2) active ingredient 1 part, alum sludge 48 parts, lime 48 parts, soya bean oil 3 parts. Sprays may be made either by applying the active ingredient to a powder, e.g. magnesium carbonate, adding an emulsifying agent and dispersing in water or by dissolving the active ingredient in a solvent, e.g. pine oil, adding an emulsifying agent and dispersing in water. The nitro diphenyl oxides may be used together with other organio or inorganic insecticidal compositions such as lead or magnesium arsenate, organic thiocyanates, phenyl benzyl ethers, or naturally occurring insecticides such as derris, rotenone, pyrethrum.
