Abstract

505,860. Controlling motor vehicles. VAU, J.-B., P. Jan, 27, 1938, No. 2581. Convention date, Jan. 27, 1937. [Class 79 (v)] The slow-running or idling control of the throttle or other engine-speed controlling means is set in either of two positions by 'the handbrake lever, so that (1) when the brake is on and the vehicle stationary the engine idles at a low speed, and (2) when the vehicle is moving and the brake is off the idling speed of the engine is higher, thus making gear-changing easier and lessening the risk of stalling the engine. In the construction shown in Fig. 1 the engine throttle 8 is controlled by the accelerator pedal 1 through a link 5 and an arm 6 fixed on the throttle shaft 7. When the accelerator pedal is released a spring 18 moves the throttle in the closing direction until either a lug 17 on the arm 6 abuts an adjustable stop 19, or a lug 16 on the arm 6 abuts against an arm 9 which is loose on the shaft 7 and is controlled by a spring 12 and a Bowden cable 10 connected to the hand-brake lever 11. When the lever 11 is pulled to apply the brake the arm 9 is pulled away from an adjustable stop 14 and the lug 17 is allowed to abut the stop 19 which determines the slowest running speed of the engine. When the hand-brake lever 11 is released the spring 12 pulls the arm 9 against the stop 14, and the arm 9 then forms an abutment for the lug 16 of the arm 6, so that the throttle cannot close to the position determined by the lug 17 and stop 14, and the engine idles at a higher speed. In a modification the accelerator pedal controls the throttle through a variable ratio device which may be of the kind described in Specification 502,726, and the throttle arms abut against a lever which has two set positions determined by two adjustable stops and is held against one stop or the other by the hand-brake lever and a spring.
