Abstract

505,709. Electrophoresis ; indiarubber compositions. JACKSON, L. MELLERSH-. (Lyons, S. C.) March 26, 1938, No. 9359. [Class 41] [Also in Group V] Particles of water-insoluble material such as clay are deposited electrophoretically from a suspension in a solution containing a watersoluble soap, or an alkali metal salt e.g. a zincate containing an amphoteric metal in the acid radical, or sodium hexametaphosphate. The deposited particles are enveloped in coatings e.g. of fatty acid or of metal oxide whereby their particulate form is maintained, and are non- plastic in the dry condition. Clay particles coated with stearic acid will float in contact with water without becoming wetted. Clay particles coated with zinc oxide may be used as a filler in an iudiarubber composition. The deposited particles may be of calcium carbonate, calcium sulphate, titanium dioxide, zinc sulphide or zinc oxide instead of clay. Suspensions of crude clay may be treated after settling of coarse impurities such as mica and sand. Electrophoretic deposition may be carried out simultaneously with centrifuging as in the apparatus described in Specification 456,353, [Group II].
