Abstract

505,454. Tins etc.; seamed joints. BOGNER, P., and LIEBEL, W. Jan. 8, 1938, No. 635. [Class 66] [Also in Group XXII] A dished closure for attachment by doubleseaming to the end of a tin or can is formed with a wall part serving as support for a ripping wire 27 and offset from the wall bounding the dished portion by a narrow shoulder. The closure with the shoulder and wall-part before seaming may be formed as shown at 56, 57, Fig. 11, the ends of the wire being passed through perforations in the wall to lie in a recessed portion 57. In the construction shown seamed-on in Fig. 4 the wall part 31 against which the wire lies forms part of a hollow part-annular ridge 25 housing the wire. During seaming the shoulder indents the metal of the body wall at 37, sealing off the wire from the interior of the can. The wire, which may be of any form and sectional shape, may additionally be held in place by solder, and a gasket 34 of rubber latex &c. may be provided. In the modification shown in Fig. 8, the wire lies in a channel with parallel-sided walls 41, 42, the outer part 40 of which is thinned to facilitate breaking. In Fig. 9 the channel and wire are given a more outwardly disposed set by the shoulder 48 being formed of greater width ; a groove 49 may be rolled in the seam indenting the inner fold at 50. Fig. 10 shows a construction with a deeper wiresupporting wall 51, an outwardly divergent channel wall 52 and a thinned outer part 54. Specification 505,439, [Group XXII], is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
