Abstract

505,089. Moulding plastic materials. BRATRING, K., and INTERNATIONAL CONTAINERS, Ltd. Nov. 1, 1937, No. 29873. Convention date, Nov. 30, 1936. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Groups IV and XVII] A waterproof hollow body is obtained by applying to a core a layer of a non-aqueous solution of a cellulose derivative, drying this layer, then applying a second layer consisting of rubber or the like or a synthetic resin, drying this layer, applying a non-aqueous solution of a cellulose derivative and drying this third layer. The cellulose derivative may be cellulose acetate, or nitrate, or other ester or ether. Instead of caoutchouc there may be used guttapercha, or balata. If a synthetic resin is used, it may be a glycerol-phthalic anhydride, or polyvinyl ester resin. Plasticizers may be present in any or all of the layers. A core may be immersed in a solution of cellulose acetate in acetone containing triphenyl phosphate or dibutyl phthalate, then in a solution of caoutchouc in benzol with an addition of a phenolaldehyde resin, and then in a solution of cellulose acetate. A solvent, e.g. methylene chloride mixed with ethyl alcohol or cyclohexanone, which is common to both the cellulose derivative layers and to the rubber or synthetic resin layer may be used. Butyl stearate may be used as plasticizer for the rubber layer. If the three-layer material is too thin, additional layers of rubber and cellulose derivative may be applied, the outer layer being of a cellulose derivative. During immersion in the rubber layer the uppermost part of the first layer may be left uncovered. When the third layer is applied, a firm adhesion between the inner and outer cellulose derivative layers is obtained. The process is applicable to the production of tubes or containers for liquids or plastic materials. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the production of waterproof films. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
