Abstract

504,917. Soot blowers. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd., GLINN, R. J., and HANDOLL, P. G. Aug. 27, 1937, No. 23544. [Class 99 (ii)] A control valve for a soot-blower is particularly applicable to boiler cleaning systems comprising a number of fluid-operated sootblowers adapted to be started in sequence wherein connection of the fluid supply to each succeeding blower is controlled by means operated in dependence on actuation of the preceding. blower. Actuation of control means for fluid which operates the valve is initiated by a member driven by the blower engine, actuation being completed independently of the member. The valve comprises a casing having a fluid inlet 2, an outlet 3 to the blower engine, and an outlet 4 to the corresponding valve of another blower. The valve member has differential pistons 8, 10 controlling the ports 3, 4, and a part 15 which is held on the seat 11 in the normal position shown. The spring and fluid-pressure loading is such that when the valve is lifted slightly off the seat 11 by a pawl 20, the valve is moved to open port 4 and close port 3. The pawl 20 is mounted on a rotary part of the blower between stops 21, 22, and is biassed by a light spring so that it is moved out of the return path of the valve stem after the valve has been raised. When it is desired that a blower shall rotate more than once before resting, the valve is moved only by the longer teeth 34.of a pinion 32, Fig. 3, actuated by a tooth 31. A spring- biassed plunger 36 acts on a cam 35 to move the tooth 34 from the return path of the valve spindle. Operation of the last blower of a series shuts off the fluid supply, each valve being reset by the spring 13 or by pressure fluid supplied and exhausted through ports 25, 26. If a blower fails the valve is actuated by fluid supplied through the port 24. For blowers of the kind comprising a blower tube which is advanced by fluid pressure to an operative position and then withdrawn, two control valves are provided, one of which is a reversing valve. Specification 437,801 is referred to.
