504,570. Joints for roads, dams, and like constructions ; walls. GOODRICH CO., B. F. Oct. 27, 1937, No. 29345. Convention date, Dec. 17, 1936. [Classes 20 (ii) and 20 (iv)] [Also in Group XXI] A joint for sealing the slot between adjacent slabs or structures forming a road, dam, or like construction comprises a pair of strips 20, 21 of resilient rubber or rubber-like material extending in spaced relation along opposite margins of the slot, one of the strips 20 being provided with one or more ribs laterally projecting from a side of the strip and embedded in the adjacent slab or structure which is of concrete, and the second strip 21 having resilient ribs held flexed against the walls of the slot. In forming the joint between adjacent concrete road slabs 10, 11, Fig. 2, a series of angle-irons 13, 14 is disposed along the joint line, prior to casting the slabs, the angle-irons being disposed with their horizontal flanges alternately directed in opposite directions and received in the channelled portions 12a, 12b of a metal base strip 12. Each angle-iron has a rearward projection 13a, 14a adapted to become anchored in the adjacent concrete slab. The joint slot between the slabs is formed by the use, when casting the slabs, of a removable core which is disposed on the lower sealing strip 20 and comprises a pair of side plates 15, 16 having spacing lugs 17, 18 and a removable cap 19 which is provided with a spacing lug 19a and downward extensions 19b. After removal of the core, a sealing strip 21, Fig. 3, is inserted in the shouldered portions 10a, 11a which are moulded at the upper part of the joint by the downward extensions 19b on the cap 19. The sealing strips 20, 21 may be hollow and formed on each side with longitudinally-extending ribs 20a, 20b, 20c, as shown in Fig. 5; the ribs of the lower strip are adapted to become anchored in the concrete slabs, and the ribs of the upper strip are adapted to be flexed against the walls of the joint when this strip, which is preferably wider than the lower strip, is inserted under lateral compression, into the joint. The ribs of the lower strip taper towards their outer ends and have their upper faces arranged in undercut relation with respect to the side of the strip so that they are maintained in sliding contact with the corresponding faces of the concrete. The upper face of the upper sealing strip may be disposed substantially flush with, or somewhat below, the surface of the road. Each of the sealing strips is provided with one or two passages, and with a groove 20d, 21d in its upper surface to prevent upward bulging of the strip. At the end of the joint, for example at the edge or middle of the road, the upper sealing strip 21 is extended and bent downwardly so as to contact with 'the top surface of the lower strip 20 ; the open end of the strip 20, and all cracks or joints of the strips are sealed by an adhesive putty, preferably of self-vulcanizing rubber composition. In a modification, the joint space is moulded without the'use of angle-iron or other metal sections by means of a one-piece core which is connected with the lower sealing strip by means of a strip, pin, or the like engaging slits provided in the lower and upper surfaces of the core and strip. The core is provided with projecting portions at its upper end to mould the slabs 10, 11 with the shoulders for the reception of the upper sealing strip 21. If desired, the concrete may be cast integrally between the upper and lower sealing strips, and a recess cast for the reception of the upper strip ; when the concrete between the two strips ruptures due to contraction of the two main concrete bodies, the slot so formed will be effectively sealed by the two strips.
