[Class 70] [Also in Group XIII] Aqueous material or artificial colloidal dispersions are coagulated by freezing the dispersion into a shape of which at least one dimension is not more than about 0À1 inch, maintaining the frozen shape below its freezing point until coagulation is complete, thawing the frozen mass so produced and finally separating the coagulum from the liquid aqueous phase by mechanical means. The latter may comprise filtration, centrifuging, washing or application of pressure. The dispersion may be frozen into a band or threads. The former is obtained by the immersion of an internally cooled cylinder or mould having the shape of a desired article in the dispersion and withdrawing it with its adhering frozen film or by forming the film on a rotating cylinder dipping in a bath of the dispersion. Threads of the frozen dispersion arc obtained by extrusion through a nozzle into a refrigerated bath of suitable liquid, such as mercury, or by spraying the material with the aid of a gas jet. The duration and temperature of freezing, preferably below -5‹ C., vary with the dispersion concerned. Natural dispersions specified include natural or synthetic rubber, guttapercha and balata latices. Specification 504,466, [Group IV], is referred to.
