Abstract
503,842. Hydraulic transmission of power; gun-fire control. INDIA RUBBER, GUTTA PERCHA, & TELEGRAPH WORKS CO., Ltd., TARRIS, F. J., and WEBB, D. Oct. 11, 1937, No. 27627. [Class 69 (ii)] [Also in Group XXI] Hydraulic apparatus comprises a hydraulic motor device for actuation by liquid under pressure, a hydraulic circuit in or to part of which the motor device is directly connected and through which hydraulic liquid is intended to be circulated at such a pressure that the motor device remains inoperative, and, to secure operation of the motor device, means to control the flow of liquid away from that part of the circuit in or to which the motor device is connected, a further hydraulic connection for supplying additional liquid under pressure to the aforesaid part of the circuit and means to control the liquid flow through the further connection. Pressure liquid is supplied by the pump 12 to the motor 60, which may be constructed as in Specification 500,725, via small lines 57, 56, and returns by line 55, 72, 54 and ports 63, 64, controlled by valve 61, and line 59 to the reservoir 10 ; this circulation is at too low a pressure to operate the motor ; the main pump supply through line 53 is blocked by the valve 61. On movement of the valve 61 to the left, line 54 is cut off from the reservoir and placed in communication with the line 53 whereupon the motor is operated. The valve 61 may be moved hydraulically under the control of valve 42, or may be remotely mechanically controlled. The lines 55, 56 are preferably flexible. Means for heating the liquid may be incorporated ; the heating effect of the pump may however be relied on; the lines 57, 56 may contain a restriction 70 which also serves to cause heating. The lines may be lagged. The invention is conveniently utilized in vehicles or aircraft in a hydraulic system for effecting and controlling the operation of auxiliary devices, such as brake mechanisms, guns (e.g. machine guns), and camera guns, and more particularly in the case of aircraft, retractable undercarriages and bomb release gear also, or for similar devices provided on the vehicles or aircraft.
