Abstract

503,686. Vehicle opening-tops. PARK, WARD, & CO., Ltd., THOMPSON, N. A. D., and PAGAN, J. W. Oct. 14, 1937, No. 27970. [Class 108 (i)] In a motor vehicle roof having an opening closable by a sliding panel A, Fig. 1, adapted to be guided into a housing beneath the rear fixed portion B, the panel. is mounted so that, for operating purposes, its front and raar ends may move substantially in a vertical plane, while on each side towards the'rear it is provided with small segments 3,Fig. 5, which are retractable inwardly and upwardly so as to reduce the effective width and depth of the panel in its housed position. As shown, the panel A and fixed framework are provided respectively with co-operating guides 1, 2, and, to provide for the necessary lifting movement of the rear edge of the panel as it reaches its closed position, the panel is pivoted about horizontal pivots 5 on the guides 1. Additional guides 40 prevent rocking of the panel on the pivots during its advancing or retracting movements. When the panel A is housed, a hinged lid 10 at the forward edge 11 of the housing 12 closes the housing, while in the advanced position of the panel the lid assumes an inclined position, Fig. 8, in which it is locked by bolts 29, Fig. 3, coacting with recesses 28 on hinged extension pieces 10a of the panel. The lid 10 is provided with plates 15, Fig. 2, which, as the lid is opened, coact with pivoted levers 18 to push the segments 3 downwardly and outwardly to complete the contour, of the vehicle roof, while, on closure of the lid 10, springs 20 retract the segments. The lid 10 is also connected by means of a double hinge 50 with a sliding plate 51 having a cam surface 52 which, as the lid is opened, engages a pawl 57 and tilts a retaining catch 54, releasing the panel A and permitting springs 46 to project it out of the housing. When the panel is again pushed into the housing and the lid 10 closed, the plate 61 is slid rearwardly and the catch 54 once more retains the panel.
