Abstract
503,643. Sulphuric acid. TRIGGS, W. W. (Soc. Generale Metallurgique de Hoboken) Dec. 24, 1937, No. 35719. Drawings to Specification. [Class 1 (ii)] In the production of sulphuric acid by the "nitrogen oxides method with the use of spaces or towers provided with filling material and in which nitrosyl-sulphuric acid for spraying the towers is utilized'in two circuits which are independent of one another, the outer circuit comprising the first and last towers in the order in which they traversed by the gaseous current is fed with an acid of 59-60‹ BÚ, and the inner circuit comprising two intermediate towers and a space for the regeneration of the nitrogen oxides between the intermediate towers is fed with an acid of 56-58‹ BÚ. The towers of the inner circuit may be provided with a packing material such that the ratio of volume of the interstices to surface of the material is smaller than, 5 litres per sq. metre. The regeneration space may be arranged above and /or below the filling material of the towers ; or the space may consist of a separate tower which may be either left empty or provided with packing leaving at least 50 per cent void, the space being sprayed with cold acid. The production, regeneration and absorption spaces constituting the inner circuit may be combined into one tower. The system of towers above described may be introduced into'the chamber system, say immediately in front of the Gay-Lussac tower. The chamber and tower systems may be so combined that the chambers convert the gases rich in sulphur dioxide whilst the more dilute gases are branched to the tower system. The chamber system may be provided with atomizing devices for the acid.
