Abstract
502,926. Making cup-shaped shells for spinnerets. AMERICAN VISCOSE CORPORATION. Dec. 15, 1937, No. 34739. Convention date, Jan. 7. [Class 83 (ii)] [Also in Group IV] The metallic shell of a spinneret to be used in the production of artificial silk or the like comprises a flanged cup-shaped piece of noble metal having a face constituted by the bottom 'of the cup for perforation to permit spinning solution to be extruded therethrough, and a side-wall thinner than the flange and face and integral therewith. It may be produced by first forming a cup-shape by a pressing operation and then thinning the side wall by a swaging or spinning operation or by turning down on a lathe. Swaging or spinning hardens the metal so that the thinner side wall is of increased strength to compensate for the reduced thickness. As shown in Fig. 1, a plate of noble metal of uniform thickness is formed into a cup with a base 14, annular flange 16, and side wall 15. The length of wall 15 is less than the depth required in the finished cup. The wall 15 is then submitted to swaging whereby it is reduced in thickness but increased in length as shown in dotted lines. The finished shell as shown in Fig. 2, has the side wall 5 thinner than the base 4 or flange 6. The flange is annularly corrugated. The base 4 is finally bored to provide the extrusion orifices. Reduction in thickness of the side wall by swaging may be effected in one or more stages. The metal is preferably of fine grain structure. As shown in Fig. 3, the spinneret shell on a mandrel 17 is placed in a swaging machine comprising a revolving disc 7 with a slot 8 and slidably mounted swaging dies 9. These dies are held between backers 10 wth projecting rounded ends. As the disc rotates the dies and backers pass between pairs of rolls 13 which force the dies 9 together. The rack 12 with rolls 13 rotates slowly in order to distribute evenly the effect of the dies. The spinneret shell may be of gold or platinum or a gold-platinum alloy.
