Abstract

502,343. Ventilating rooms and other enclosures; nonconducting coverings for sound. BURGESS BATTERY CO. July 13, 1937, No. 19383. Convention date, Aug. 1, 1936. [Class 137] [Also in Group XIII] In the distribution of air in a ventilating system, the air is supplied through a duct such as 22 to the space 19 above a ceiling formed of a number of perforated air distributing units 13, each comprising a lower perforated plate 15 above which and spaced therefrom is a panel of air-impervious soundabsorbing metering 16. Air passes from the space 19 to the space above the perforated plates through channel members 1 disposed between the material 16 and the flanges 23 of the plates 15. The air flow through each member 1 is restricted and controlled by passage through slots 9 at the top and slots 10 at the bottom uncovered by bending outwards, portions 11 of flanges 8. Flanges 12 may be bent downwardly to space the channel members from the perforated plates 15. Spacers 18 are provided below the panels 16 which abut against a pair of channel members 1, grooves 25 in which engage in beads 24 in the flanges 23. The air is distributed throughout the space below the panels 16, and issues through per- . forations into the enclosure below. In a modification, Fig. 14, the spacers 18 are replaced by tubular panel supports 43 which have their ends 44 turned up to open into the space above panels 16. Slots 45 permit the entry of air into the space above the perforated bottom 15, and supporting hooks 46 engage the edges of the flanges 23. The panels may have recesses to take the turned up ends 44, but may be sufficiently yielding to render this unnecessary. In Fig. 4 is shown a tubular member 48 through which air passes from an opening 51 in the top through slots 52 near its bottom into the space above the plate 15. Discs 50 having orifices 51 of various sizes may be used to control the air supply to each of these members. Specifications 327,186 and 328,617, [both in Class 20 (iv)], are referred to.
