Abstract
501,736. Cracking carbonaceous materials.; catalytic agents. JOHNSON, G. W. (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.) Aug. 25, 1937, No. 23340. [Classes 1 (i) and 32] Liquid or semi-solid carbonaceous materials are cracked in' presence of a catalyst containing aluminium oxide and boric acid pre- 'pared by mixing an alumina gel with boric acid. Temperatures from 300-700‹ C. and pressures of 10-200 atmos. may be employed with the addition of gases, e.g. hydrogen, steam, nitrogen or oxides of carbon. In the example, concentrated aqueous ammonia is added to an aluminium nitrate solution to precipitate the gel which is filtered, washed, mixed with crystallized boric acid, and dried at 200‹ C. German mineral oil boiling between 200 and 350‹ C. is passed in vapour form through a chamber kept at 460‹ C., filled with the catalyst shaped to pea-size, a highly anti-knock benzine being obtained without appreciable formation of gases or condensation products.
