501,545. Measuring-tapes. MARPLES, S. A. Sept. 1, 1937, No. 23868. [Class 106 (ii)] In instruments for measuring length using a flexible cord or chain which operates an indicator, the ratio between the length of cord pulled out of the instrument and the movement of the indicator can be varied. The instrument can thus be used to measure distances on maps of various scales and by suitably adjusting the ratio before measuring on each map the indications of the instrument can be directly compared without necessitating calculation to allow for the scale variations. As shown the measuring cord is wound on a drum e which drives units and tens indicators h and j through gearing g<1>, g<2> and g<3>. The diameter of the drum is varied to change the ratio by superimposing a suitable number of rings m and n thereon. Alternatively the drum may be replaced by a disc bearing concentric circles of pins and the cord may be wound round any desired circle. In a modified construction only one circuit of pins q is provided but these are mounted on rotatable bases t so that their radial distance from the centre of the main dise f can be varied. Also the drum may remain of fixed diameter and the variation is then produced by change speed gearing between the drum and indicator.
