Abstract

501,024. Lime silica compositions. GYPSUM, LIME, and ALABASTINE, CANADA, Ltd. Aug. 19, 1937, No. 22738. Convention date, Aug. 22, 1936. [Classes 22 and 70] [Also in Group III] Porous light-weight structural material consisting of silica particles bonded with calcium silicate is made by a process comprising a crystal-generating stage in which a suspension of silica particles in saturated lime water is heated under steam pressure and an indurating stage in which after removal of the lime water the residue is heated under steam pressure. During the first stage, crystals of Hillebrandite 2CaO.SiO2.H2O are formed and during the indurating stage these are converted into Gyrolite 2CaO.3SiO2.2H2O. The crystalgenerator shown, comprises a cylindrical pressure tank 1 having a conical end provided with a detachable cover for charging and discharging. The other end is fitted with a steam pipe 3. The tank is fitted internally with blades 8 and is adapted to be rotated to keep the silica particles in suspension. After the first stage heating the material is tipped into a mould having a perforated bottom 13 and a detachable liner 14 capable of acting as a filter to release the lime solution. The moulded blocks are then placed in an indurating autoclave, where they are heated for instance at 120 lb. steam pressure for about 8 hours.
