Abstract
500,801. Heel-attaching machines. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., GOULDBOURN, J., and KESTELL, T. A. July 31,1937, No. 21258. [Class 17 (i)] Relates to machines o the kind described in Specifications 23,031/11 [Class 17 (i)], 451,350 and 461,410, and consists in modifications mainly pro viding that a single de pression of the operating treadle automatically re sults in heel attaching and top piece securing being performed in sequence A band clamp 3 of the kind described in Specification 475,579 is used for positioning the shoe. As described in the prior Specifications a treadle 29 first depresses a last plate 1 and then engages a clutch to drive the machine through a complete cycle including two depressions of the plate. The nail transferring device 9 carries nails to the jack, and is pivoted at 197. It is connected by a link 193, slotted to allow lost motion, to an arm 191 of the heel and top lift holder pivoted at 189. The holder comprises a front bar 19 and fork 21 for holding a heel, and similar members 23, 25 for engaging a top lift. A spring 201 urges the holder clockwise, a latch 217 engaging the end of the arm 191 to prevent this movement except when the latch is released.. As described in the prior Specifications, the plate 1 is depressed by a rod 41. This rod and a short rod 39 below it, form a toggle bent and straightened by a link 137 as the treadle is depressed and, for the second time in the cycle, after one revolution of the cam-shaft. A bell-crank lever 225, which can be moved by a knob 229, but which is normally held in either extreme position by a spring 231, maintains a link 207 in position to be actuated by a compression spring 213 when the latch is tripped, to bring the top lift over the heel. To allow the plate 1 to descend a smaller distance at its second descent, since the surface of the top-lift is higher than the top of the heel, the lower end of the link 39 is supported by a piston 145 working in oil in a cylinder 143, a valve 161 depressed by a spring 165 closing a byepass when the clutch is engaged. When the byepass is closed the piston can move downwards, and open the valve against the resistance of the spring, but cannot move upwards. The nail drivers are raised by a cam 93 instead of by the toggle described in the prior Specifications. In operation, nails are supplied to the jack by the device 9, a shoe is positioned on the jack, and a heel and top lift in the holder 5. The treadle is then depressed, first bringing the clamp 1 down on to the heel and then starting the machine, which drives the attaching nails, the points projecting at the tread face of the heel. As the toggle breaks and the clamp 1 ascends the top lift is swung into position above the heel and the second depression of the clamp presses it onto the ends of the nails. The second rise of the nail drivers is inoperative since no fresh nails have been supplied. The clamp rises and the work may be removed and the cycle repeated.
