Abstract

500,455. Electric furnaces. MAUTSCH, R. Dec. 13, 1937, No. 34510. Convention date, Dec. 24, 1936. [Class 39 (iii)] Furnace electrodes, particularly for the production of alloys, are formed by agglomerating metal cuttings according to Specification 500,504. They may be formed continuously at the furnace and two such electrodes are fed through bushes 13, an arc being maintained between their ends. Any desired gas is supplied through pipe 16. A single vertical electrode may co-operate with a molten bath. The cuttings 3 may be fed into a hopper 2 from which they are drawn by compression rolls 4. The guide tube 6 between the rolls 4 and further rolls 7, 8, which latter rolls also subject the cuttings to twisting, is provided with nozzles for the introduction of metal powder. Metal wire 23 of desired composition may be introduced by a guide 24.
