Abstract

499,553. Rotary internal-combustion engines. McINTYRE, H. March 25, 1938. No. 9222. [Class 110 (ii)] The engine is of the geared-vane type comprising two discs 12, 13, each having four pistons 14 ... 17 and 18 ... 21 attached to their peripheries. A shaft 9 is driven by the discs 12, 13 through crank-pins 30 on cranks 31 having trunnions 33 supported in bearings 35. Pinions 36 are keyed to trunnions 33 and mesh with internal gears 44 which are secured in cylindrical recesses in fly-wheels 40. Bearings 43 are carried by cranks 46x. The cranks have each a shaft 46 carried by bearings 43, 41x. Gears 48 on the shafts 46 mesh with stationary racks 38, 39. The gear 48 and rack 38 have a gear ratio of four to one. The crank-pins 30 rotate in an anticlockwise direction around centres formed by trunnions 33 and the gears 36 travel around the internal gears 44 in a clockwise direction, held in mesh by crank arms 46x revolving in annular recesses 45. By this means the shafts 46 are rotated to rotate gears 48 meshing with racks 38, 39 and through the fly-wheels 40 driving the shaft 9 in an anticlockwise direction of rotation. Gears 36 and internal gears 44 have a gear ratio of one to two. The discs 12, 13 have slots 26, 27 and 28, 29, curving in opposite directions, the pins 30 moving along these curves to give the discs alternating fast and slow motions. Ports 23 act as both air inlet and exhaust ports. A part of the incoming air is deflected into an exhausting space for scavenging purposes. The air remains at atmospheric pressure while gratings 23, on each side of the annular cylinder are open to the annular cylinder. Fuel is injected through holes 24, 25, and is burnt due to the heat of the air compressed between a pair of pistons. While a working piston is being driven forward by the gases expanding to atmospheric pressure, the following pair of pistons containing a compressed charge move past holes 24 or 25. Figs. 1, 26 shows a form of fuel injector that may be used with the engine. A cam-shaft 50 is driven by the shaft 9 through gearing 51 ... 55. The cam 56 operates spring- pressed plungers 57 for forcing oil fed into a duct 57x through ports 58 as the cam releases each plunger. The oil pressure raises a needle valve 59 provided with spiral grooves 59x which impart a whirling motion to the oil as it passes through flared orifices 24, 25.
