Abstract
499,533. Electrically - released switches ; arc - rupturing in switches. CRABTREE & CO., Ltd., J. A. (Schiele Industriewerke) Nov. 16, 1937, Nos. 31427 and 31428. [Class 38 (v)] A circuit-breaker comprises a heat sensitive trip disposed in a heat-insulating box for opening on sustained normal overloads, and an electromagnetic trip disposed in a recess outside the box so as to be thermally insulated from the thermal trip, and adapted for opening on abnormal overloads. The poles of the magnet may extend in proximity to the breaker contacts for arc-quenching purposes. In the three-phase example shown, the heat-insulating box 1 is partitioned at 1a to form three releasecontaining chambers 2 and a chamber 3 accommodating the ambient-temperature compensating means and an auxiliary switch controlling the main tractive-magnet coil and adapted to be opened by the trip member 4 pivoted at 13. Each chamber 2 contains a U-shaped thermal strip 5 embracing a heating coil 6 in the associated phase, the arrangement being generally as described in Specification 498,325. An external recess 15 formed in the box 1 below each lever of the trip member 4, receives an electromagnetic trip the poles 16 of which have extensions 17 on each side of the fixed contact 18, these extensions having projections 20 engaging retaining holes 21 in the recess-wall. The coil 22 is on a core extending between the poles, and the armature 24 is on a spring-loaded pin 25 which extends between the poles through the upper recess wall for operating the associated trip lever, the armature-travel being suitably restricted so as not to weaken the blow-out field unduly. Hollow or cavity walls may be provided for the partitions la and end-walls 1b of the box, and the position of the depending arm 12 of each trip lever assists the thermal isolation. Specification 439,242 is referred to in the second Provisional Specification.
