[Class 75 (iii)] In hydraulic apparatus for simultaneously tilting a pair of aircraft or other vehicle lamps through equal angles and comprising a casing 1 containing a pair of pistons 9, operated by rotating a screwed spindle 8 to force liquid from the cylinders 4 through openings 25 into pipe lines 27 and a pair of cylinders 30 containing spring-pressed pistons 33 connected by links 37 to the lamps, a liquid reservoir 21, fixed to, or formed on, the casing 1, communicates through a passage 18, openings 17 and radial passages 24 with the cylinders 4 and spring-pressed valves 11 are provided in the pistons 9 for closing the openings 17 during the initial forward movement of the pistons. The valves are retracted by shoulders 14 when the pistons are returned to the initial positions. As shown, the reservoir 21 is secured by a plug 20 with interconnected passages 19, 23. The spindle 8, which may be rotated directly, or through gearing, by a hand wheel &c., is held against axial movement by a collar 8a and a thrust peg 8b and operates a sliding sleeve 6 having arms 7a engaging grooves in projections 9a on the pistons 9. An air trap is provided in each pipe 27. The pistons 33 have flanged heads 34 engaging washers 35 slidable in the cylinders 30, which are mounted on ball-headed pins 38 on the vehicle. Circumferential grooves 10 are provided in the pistons 9, 33 for lubrication purposes. More than two lamps may be operated by providing additional pistons and cylinders. The Provisional Specification describes also a modification in which the pistons in the cylinders 4 are mounted in flexible diaphragms and carry spindles for operating leaf springs to close the inlets to the cylinders, and the lamp operating devices comprise shafts controlled by expansible bags.
