Abstract
498,670. Rope railways. FLINN, H. V. June 8, 1937, No. 15907. [Class 104 (ii)] A railway suitable for use as a toy comprises a mono-rail track consisting mainly of a tensioned wire or cable 6, 7, and one or more connecting devices, such as points 10 and crossings 11 supported by the tensioned track. The track may be a closed loop, formed by the wires 6, 7 and rigid end supports 4, 5 with vertical flanges 8 forming the ends of the track. Within the closed loop may be arranged a cross rail 9 and a smaller loop, formed by wires 7, 12 and rigid end pieces 13, 14 supported from the main ends 4, 5 by bridge members 15. One of the end supports 4, 5 may be pivoted about the longitudinal axis of the loop so that by tilting it, the vehicle 1 may be made to run by gravity. Or the vehicle may be propelled by a motor thereon driving one or more of the pulleys 2, 3 and drawing electric current from the electrified wire 18 through a trolly 19, the return circuit being through the track. Alternatively, a dual conductor such as that described in Specification 493,132 may be used. A doublepoint device 61 may be provided for sidetracking and reversing the vehicle on the main track. The end pieces 4, 5 may be replaced by four or more corner pieces.
