Abstract

498,574. Spray-apparatus. HORTON, A. March 3, 1938, No. 6667. [Class 69 (iii)] Liquid is evenly distributed over ground surfaces by means of piping L laid underground and provided with single spray points S arranged so that they form corners of overlapping equilateral triangles which are displaced relatively to each other a distance equal to half the side of the triangle, togetherwith a travelling spraying apparatus such as is described in Specification 253,459 adapted to be connected to the spray points in turn. The spray nozzle is rotated and as will be seen from Fig. 4, the shaded parts would be sprayed once only while the other parts are sprayed twice over. To obviate this, each circle is sprayed with only half the amount of liquid necessary so that the overlapping parts of the circles get their full amount and the rotation of the spray nozzle in passing over the shaded areas is slowed down so that an adequate amount of liquid is sprayed over these areas. Where the double shaded area shown in Fig. 5, would consequently receive too much the ring distributing device described in the above mentioned Specification is provided with additional obstructions to obviate this. The spraying nozzle is rotated both clockwise and anticlockwise and the distributing device is operated so that the liquid is sprayed in a star form, the points of which when the spraying nozzle rotates in one direction being displaced in relation to the opposite rotation of the spraying nozzle. To counteract the effect of wind the reversal of rotation of the nozzle is adjusted to take place when the spray is directed at right-angles to the wind and this may be in advance or in the rear of the nozzle in rotating. A switch device is described to effect this and as shown in Fig. 12, a rotating arm a is provided with three brushes, the centre one of which is always in contact with a conducting ring while the others are in contact with non- conducting rings provided with contacts cc, cl and these latter rings may be rotated or adjusted into required position so that a contact being made with the contacts cc or cl the required reversal takes place. A recording device may be provided to show that all the spray points have been connected with the travelling spraying device and also such other information as is desired such as the pressure &c.
