Abstract

498,523. Strainers. FLINT, J. A. July 10, 1937, No. 19208. [Class 46] Solids are separated from liquids in a container which has a sloping perforated bottom extending above the liquid level and is vibrated so that solids collecting on the bottom are conveyed upwardly thereon out of the liquid. The vibratory movements are such as to give the same average velocity in both directions of movement and may be of a frequency of 3000 cycles per minute. The apparatus is particularly applicable for dewatering coal. The container shown has sides 11, a bottom 12 perforated with oval apertures and a lower end wall 16. A sheet of fine gauze is riveted or otherwise firmly secured over the bottom 12. The container is vibrated in a direction at an acute angle to the bottom 12 by an electromagnetic vibrator 23 carried by a bracket 20, which is attached to the sides 11 and to spring bars 21, the ends of which are fixed to a casting 22. The casting 22 is supported by a pair of flexible members 28, comprising coil springs, and a similar pair of supports 29 are connected to the lower end of the container. The mixture of liquid and solids is fed to the lower end of the container through a pipe 40 and fills the container to the level 18. The vibration causes the solid matter collecting on the bottom to travel upward and pass over the upper end 19 from which it is delivered by a shoot 31 to a conveyer 32. Some liquid passes through the perforated bottom into a hopper 34 and other liquid flows over the wall 16 and is directed into the hopper by a flume 35. Matter settling in the hopper may be returned by a pump 39 through a pipe 139 to the centre of the container and liquid overflows from the hopper into a flume 36. The bottom 12 may be reinforced by transverse plates 33.
