Abstract

498,412. Ice - making; cooling chambers. WUSSOW, R. E. W., and FECHNER, F. W. July 8, 1937, No. 19005. [Class 29] In apparatus for the production of ice or cooling down a liquid comprising evaporator cells 3 open at both ends round which refrigerant flows and which are immersed in a bath 22 of the liquid to be cooled or frozen, air or part of the liquid being injected into the cells through nozzles 26 to promote circulation, the evaporator cells are made of separate pressure-tight double tubes, the refrigerant flowing through the annular spaces thus formed. The compressor 1 discharges refrigerant through condenser 2, a refrigerant cooler 7, a jacket 8, and a reducing valve 4 to a container 5. From thence the refrigerant passes to the evaporators 3 and then through connection 12 to compressor 1. In order to thaw out the ice blocks the compressor 1 is reversed so that evaporators 3 act as condensers. This effect is supplemented by pipes 18 for heating medium. The blocks rise to the surface of the liquid and are removed by a conveyor 24. In an alternative construction the refrigerant is led through a coil within container 5 prior to being admitted thereto instead of through a jacket 8. The evaporators 3 also may have the liquid sprayed into them instead of being immersed in a bath. Alternatively the liquid in the bath is not frozen and articles to be cooled are moved through the bath by a chain conveyer.
