Abstract

498,246. Electrostatic separators. INTERNATIONAL TITANIUM, Ltd. Aug. 16, 1937, No. 22494. Convention date, Aug. 24, 1936. [Class 72] In the separation of particles, such as rutile and zircon sands, which differ in their ability to receive electrical charges, the particles are passed through an electrostatic separator and the moisture content of the atmosphere of the zone of separation or electrostatic field is controlled so that it is below a predetermined maximum, i.e. a relative humidity of less than 40 per cent, a preferred humidity being less than 34 per cent. The separator or zone of separation is located in a chamber not above ordinary room temperature and the humidity of the atmosphere is controlled by removing part of its normal moisture content. The electrostatic separator is enclosed in a room 1 and comprises a rotary electrode 3 and a fixed electrode 5, the material being fed on to the roller 3 from a hopper 2 and the material adhering to the roller 3 being removed by a scraper 4. A divider 6 directs the separated materials into receptacles 7, 8. The moisture content of the air is controlled by forcing the air of the room by means of a fan through screens 10 covered with calcium chloride 11 and contained in a casing 9.
