Abstract

497,952. Inclinometers; gyroscopic apparatus. SOC. CIVILE D'ETUDES DE CONSTRUCTIONS AERONAUTIQUES E. C. A. June 30, 1937, No. 18231. Convention date, June 30, 1936. [Classes 97 (ii) and 97 (iii)] A gyroscope is used to counteract the effects of centrifugal force on a pendulum and the mass of the latter is formed by the liquid of a liquid pressure gauge subject to a partial vacuum created by the speed of the supporting craft so that the effective length of the pendulum varies inversely as the speed and the gyroscopic couple due to turning counteracts the centrifugal force at all speeds and rates of turning. As shown in Fig. 2, the suction at the throat of a Venturi tube 50 is applied through the pivot axis to the interior of a hollow pendulum and is utilized to draw mercury from the vessel A through the aperture 54 into the hollow stem B. In this way, the centre of gravity may be automatically raised, e.g. from G to G<1>. The gyroscope may be mounted to spin about a transverse axis in the pendulum. As shown in Fig. 4, the gyroscope 3 spins in a precession frame 8 which is connected by links 20, 23 to one end of a bellcrank lever 35. A representation of an aircraft 26 is pivoted at the other end of the bellcrank lever 35 and is connected by pin-andslot mechanism 28, 29 to the pendulum 1 which carries an indicating disc 31.
