Abstract

497,040. Perforating record cards. BRITISH TABULATING MACHINE CO., Ltd. June 11, 1937, No. 16306. Convention date, June 12, 1936. [Class 31 (ii)] [Also in Group XIX] Record - card - controlled statistical apparatus with grouped-card and totalpunching controls has means 519, 527 for transmitting the amount in a counter 200 to a register 503, which controls the punches at total-punching, which transmitting means is prevented from acting until the previous total is fully punched. With this arrangement tabulation on a new card group may proceed whilst the total of the previous group is being punched. The punching machine is of the kind set out in Specification 362,529. When a punch selecting magnet 540, Figs. 9 and 6, is energized a corresponding interposer 545 is moved to the left between a plate 546 and the corresponding punch 547. As the interposer moves to the left it rocks an arm 551 which in turn moves a parallel bar 552 to the left, Fig. 7, to close contacts 553 which energize the punch magnet 554 ; the latter pulls down the plate 546 to effect punching. Escapement mechanism then operates to move the card carriage 565 one step to position the next card column under the single row of punches. Carried on the carriage 565 is an insulated pair of brushes 579 for bridging a common bar 580 and segments 581. which latter are plug-connected, Fig. 9, to the desired bars 506 of the register 503. As each card column is punched by the punches 547 the card carriage, in escaping one step to the left, brings the top brush 579 on to the next segment 581 to bring the next bar 506 and its roller 505 in circuit with the row of magnets 540 so that punching proceeds automatically denomination by denomination. At total-taking the magnet 590 is energized and closes all the contacts 590b. As the card carriage reaches its last position to the left, it opens contacts 577 to de-energize the magnet 590. If, however, the next card group is a small one initiation of a totaltaking cycle is prevented while punching is still taking place. For this purpose, during punching the magnet 590 is energized and closes contacts 590d and opens contacts 590e. The latter prevent energization of the totaltaking initiating magnet 254 and contacts 590d (if switch S3 is in full line position) cause the stop magnet 367 to be energized when the card group changes. When the card carriage in the punch reaches its last position it opens contacts 577 and de-energizes the magnet 590. If switch S3 is in full line position the energization of magnet 254 is automatic ; with switch S3 in dotted position the manual total key 363 must be depressed.
