496,619. Loud-speakers. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAM. PENFABRIEKEN. Jan. 20, 1938, No. 1949. Convention date, Jan. 23, 1937. Drawings to Specification. [Class 40 (iv)] A loud-speaker is provided with a baffle in the form of a casing, part of whose walls allows air to pass, that part of the walls being provided with an acoustic resistance which has a value such that the ratio of the volume speed of the air adjacent the resistance to that of the air adjacent the diaphragm does not exceed 3 /2, volume speed being defined as the product of the speed of the air and the area through which it flows. The value of the acoustic resistance is also such that the peak in the response curve due to resonance of the speaker in the casing is not more than four decibels above the mean value at higher frequencies such as from 400 to 800 cycles per second. The resistance may be formed of one or more layers of flexible material such as fabric or thin paper supported on an apertured rigid plate-like body, the apertures occupying from 20 to 75 per cent of its surface. The resistance material used may have a resistance of from 30 to 150 mechanical ohms per square centimetre.
