Abstract
496,372. Variable - camber wings for aircraft. CRAIGON, A. May 17, 1938, No. 14618. Convention date, May 17, 1937. [Class 4] An aircraft wing comprises a fixed portion and a number of portions which are slidable spanwise to increase the camber of the wing but without substantially increasing the area thereof or modifying the form of the under surface of the wing. The main wing comprises spars 2, Fig. 6, of box form, ribs 3, and an aerofoil shaped housing 6, Fig. 4, within which may be nested a number of cover elements 8 of greater camber than the main wing. Each element 8 comprises a rib carrying rollers adapted to run in guides formed in the spars 2 and guide bars 13 adapted to pass through apertures in the adjacent ribs. Extension and retraction of the cover portions 8 is effected by means of endless cables 15 secured to a windlass 16 and to the rib 10 of the outermost section 8. The windlasses of a pair of wings may be geared together. Abutting wing sections engage by means of hook portions 19, Fig. 7, and wedge portions 18. The wedge portions and the edge of the outermost sections are effective in removing ice formations. Ailerons and split flaps are provided on the fixed wing portion.
