Abstract

An adsorbent upon which gases or suspended substances present in the atmosphere may be concentrated and subsequently detected by a suitable reagent comprises a colourless or brightly coloured activated gel applied to a colourless or brightly coloured carrier, other than an ordinary textile fabric. Suitable gels are the oxides of silicon, cerium, thorium, zirconium, and aluminium. Suitable carriers are glass, quartz, asbestos, ceramic substances, hard wood, gypsum, and naturally occurring minerals. The carrier may be in the form of plates, leaves, plaited or woven work, fibres, balls, cubes, cylinders, &c. The gel may be attached to the carrier by means of a quick-drying viscous binding agent having a low vapour pressure, such as a lacquer, balsam, resin, or soap.
