[Class 78 (iv)] [Also in Group XXI] A portable excavator or crane comprises a travel base rotatably supporting a superstructure which is tiltable relatively thereto in the direction of travel of the machine, and means for controlling the tilting so that the superstructure can assume a substantially horizontal position when the base is on a slope. In Fig. 2, two tractor units 9 are connected by cross beams 18 and are driven from a shaft 7 through gears 12, 13, and chains 16. The body member 1, carrying the turntable on which the superstructure rotates, has rigidly fixed thereto abutments 8 pivoted on the shaft 7, and fluid-pressure rams 25, pivotally engaging pillow blocks 28 on the tractor frames and arms 20 on the abutments 8, tilt the body member 1 under control of valves with a common operating handle 31. In Figs. 7 and 8, members 42 are fixed at each side of the body member 1 and have at each end gear segments 43, 44, meshing respectively with pinions 45, 47, pinions 45 being fixed to a hollow shaft 49, and pinions 47 being loose on a shaft 48. The pairs of pinions 45, 47 are connected by chains 50. Tilting of the machine is effected by the weight of the superstructure &c. under control of brake bands 53 encircling brake drums 52 on the hollow shaft 49 and controlled by levers 54. The tilting may also be positively effected through mechanical or fluid pressure means.
