Abstract
Silver halide emulsions are sensitized by symmetrical carbocyanine dyes which contain two benzoxazole nuclei substituted by phenyl in 6 and 61 positions, united by a polymethine chain, the central carbon atom of which carries an alkyl group or by unsymmetrical carbocyanine dyes having an alkyl substituent attached to the central carbon atom of the polymethine chain and containing a benzoxazole nucleus substituted by phenyl in 6 position, the second nucleus being unsubstituted or having a substituent, especially an alkyloxy group, in 51 or 61 position. The second nucleus may be a benzthiazole, benzselenazole or 1 : 3 : 3-trimethylindoline nucleus. Suitable dyes are those formed by condensing 6-phenyl-2-methylbenzoxazole ethiodide with ethyl orthopropionate in pyridine and by condensing 6 - phenyl - 2 - methylbenzoxazole ethiodide and 6-methoxy-2-methylbenzthiazole ethiodide. 6-Phenyl-benzoxazole is prepared by nitrating para-oxydiphenyl, reducing the nitro group to an amino group and effecting ring closure by treatment with an organic acid anhydride.
