Abstract
495,796. Moulding shoe stiffeners &c. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., BENNION, L. H., and RIVING- TON, A. A. May 21, 1937. No. 14114. [Class 17 (i)] A device for presenting a counter blank or a like heelward end part to the moulds of a machine of the kind described in Specification 268,032, [Class 17 (i)], is swung on a pivoted arm from loading to presenting position, and is moved angularly with respect to the arm during this transit. The arm is pivoted to the support for the male mould, and the device is mounted on the arm resiliently, a stop limiting heightwise movement of the device with the mould. The device comprises a table 501 provided with a pair of fixed jaws 503, 507 co-operating with a pair of movable jaws 505, 509 actuated by segments gearing with a double rack 525 on a rod urged by a spring 537 in a direction to close the jaws, a cam 543 co-operating with a head 541 on the rod to move the rod axially. The cam is turned by handles 549, 551. The table is adjustable along a block 515 provided with trunnions 581 each mounted in a block sliding in a slot 573 and urged to the top of the slot by a spring, the slots being formed in a pair of arms 559 pivoted at 563 to the support for the male mould and connected by a plate 569. The block 515 is swung on its pivots by an arm 583 linked to an arm 587 provided with a catch 601 co-operating with a hook 603 secured to the support for the male mould, a slotted link 597 limiting the outward position of the arms 559 and a spring 595 tending to raise them. A stop 613 co-operates with a surface 615 to limit the inward swing of the arms 559, produced by a treadle or handle, and a stop 609 co-operates with a surface 607 to limit the clockwise swing of the device about the trunnions 581. The arm 587 is urged outwardly by a spring plunger 605. In operation, the parts being in the position shown but the jaws open, the ends of a blank are slid into the jaws, being guided thereto by the sides of a block 553, and the handle 549 is depressed to allow the jaws to close. The arms are then swung up, the device swinging clockwise to tip the blank to presenting position between the moulds. As the male mould rises, rolls 617 on the trunnions 581 contact with brackets 619 and cause the blank to lag and hug the male mould. As the flange former 185 descends, a bracket 625 thereon contacts with the handle 551 and opens the jaws, releasing the blank to the grip of the moulds. If the presenter is not, then, allowed to fall away, a plate 633 cams it away from the descending flange former. In a modification, to prevent bounce when either of the stops are contacted, a latch, released when the cam 543 is turned, is provided to hold the device from anticlockwise movement in the " presenting " position. Similarly, the arms 559 are held in presenting position by a catch comprising a lever carrying a cam surface contacted by the roll 617 and snapping behind it, the lever being actuated on the descent of the flange former to release the roll.
