Abstract
A mechanically-produced and optically-reproducible sound record is obtained by subjecting a film of a cellulose derivative such as an organic or inorganic ester to saponification at its surface to a depth sufficient for the reception of the record, and providing the surface of the layer of regenerated cellulose with a covering layer which is opaque to the light required for the reproducing and copying operations, the sound record being then mechanically produced on the film, e.g. by means of a V-shaped chisel. The cellulose ester may be cellulose acetate or nitrate. The covering layer may be obtained by applying a sol, associated with a protective colloid, of a metal sulphide such as mercury sulphide, or Berlin blue, or colloidal carbon, or it may be obtained by applying a metal salt solution such as a nickel salt and then treating with a sulphide solution so as to obtain an insoluble metal sulphide. As an alternative, the opaque coating may be obtained by treating the regenerated cellulose layer with a photosensitive diazonium compound, exposing it and causing the light-decomposition product to react with a mercurous salt whereby a mercury layer is produced on and in the regenerated cellulose layer. The mercury layer may be converted to a highly opaque silver layer by treatment with silver nitrate. In the case of cellulose acetate, the saponification may be carried out with alcoholic caustic potash. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers also to the use of benzyl and ethyl cellulose ether films. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
