Abstract
An alloy having a low elastic limit and a low temperature coefficient of elastic modulus, especially for helical, hair, and other springs, bourdon tubes, metallic bellows, tuning forks, &c., comprises 34,5-37 per cent of nickel, 5-10 per cent of chromium, not more than 0,2 per cent of carbon, and a total of 0,35-0,65 per cent of one or more hardening agents chosen from the group molybdenum, tungsten, titanium, vanadium, cobalt, uranium, and tantalum, the balance being iron with or without 0,45-0,75 per cent of manganese and 0,3-0,6 per cent of silicon. The alloy may be annealed (in some cases at 400-1300 DEG F.), cold worked to reduce its cross-sectional area by over 85 per cent (in some cases 90-99,9 per cent), and hardened by heating at 400-1300 DEG F. (in some cases for 4 hours at 1300 DEG F. or 20 minutes at 750 DEG F.) According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, chromium is not an essential constituent of the alloy. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
