Abstract
495,374. Hardening gear - wheels. SHORTER PROCESS CO., Ltd. (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.) May 5, 1937, No. 12841. [Class 72] In a machine for hardening gear-wheels of the type in which the wheel is rotated intermittently to bring each tooth successively in front of a heater which is progressed along the tooth, an electrical contact in the heater carriage operates at the end of each tooth hardening operation to cause electromechanical means to rotate the gear-wheel through the space of one tooth, the said means being rendered inoperative whilst the next tooth is being hardened. The wheel 11 is mounted in a shaft in proximity to a burner 6 mounted in a carriage 3 on which is slidably arranged an arm 4 provided with a driving wheel 7 constrained to remain in contact with a cam 8 by a solenoid and moved over said cam by a motor 10. Contacting with the wheel 11 is a wheel 12 mounted on a shaft which is driven by a worm 14, worm wheel 13, and change speed wheels 15, 16 from a motor 17. The shaft 18 is provided with a contact disc 19 which after each revolution of the shaft operates an electric relay 20, the motor 17 being connected to a contact 21 arranged on the carriage 2. A countercontact 22 is arranged on the carriage 3. When a tooth has been hardened by the burner 6, i.e. when the carriage 3 has reached its final position, the motor 17 is switched on by the connection of the contacts 21, 22 and the wheel 11 moved the space of one tooth. After one revolution of the shaft 18 the disc 19 operates the relay 20 and the current to the motor 17 is switched off. In a modification, the wheel 11 is turned through a train of gearing by means of a ratchet wheel and pawl operable by an electromagnet controlled by a relay operated by the burner carriage. In a second modification, the shaft carrying the wheel 12 is provided with a dividing plate having a plurality of equispaced circumferential apertures adapted to be engaged by a spring-pressed index pin magnetically controlled in such a manner that the pin is withdrawn to allow rotation of the plate when the magnet is energized by a relay. The burner carriage may be returned to its initial position as described in Specification 466,812.
