Abstract

495,315. Adjusting wireless apparatus. METCALFE, C. May 5, 1937, No. 12804. [Class 37] A radio receiver is provided with an indicator having station names and their corresponding tuning marks arranged in wave range groups, a tuning indicator co-operating with the marks and being independently operative throughout each range, and a common actuating means for the station indicator and range changer arranged so that successive presentation of each name singly occurs from group to group as the actuating member is operated. As shown, a carriage 16 carrying a pointer or cursor 30 over the station name indicator 12 moves along an upper frame member 15 secured to forwardly extending side flanges 10, 11 on uprights 8, 9, the name indicator 12 being of the curtain type on rollers 35, 36. Alternatively, the indicator can be in the form of a drum with suitable gearing. A cord drive 20 from the spindle 25 of the tuning condenser to the carriage 16 is controlled by coarse and fine tuning spindles 26, 28. Actuating mechanism 18 for the name indicator 12 and wave range switch is supported on a lower frame member 17 and comprises a spindle 37 in the hollow spindle of a range change switch. On spindle 37 is a wheel 42 meshing with a pinion 45 having projections 47, 48 engaging abutment 49 and forming limit stops, the shaft 64 of pinion 45 driving the scale rollers 35, 36 through gearing 55 ... 60. Pinion 45 also has pins 50 ... 52 engaging slots in a Geneva wheel 53 gearing with the wave range spindle. Roller 36 is under spring tension and a further spring 62 is provided so that the name indicator always remains in the position to which it is set. At each end of roller spindle 61 is a boss 70 connecting with an arm 76 through lost motion washers, the arm 76 being linked to pins 78 on a mask 81 that fills the aperture 32 in an escutcheon 31. The mask 81 has viewing apertures 83, 84, the latter registering with an enlarged part 34 of the aperture 32 in escutcheon 31. Further pins 85, 86 are spring-connected to points 89, 90 on the members 10, 11. The station indicator is of translucent material with the names in opaque ink, the tuning-marks almost filling the aperture 83 in the mask 81, and the names filling the aperture 84. End portions of the marks represent the tuning tolerance for the particular station. A short-wave area is provided on the band indicator, or at 110 on the escutcheon 31, and also a gramophone position. The mask 81 is moved from the apertures 32, 34 when the actuating mechanism 18 is operated for the short-wave position or other setting, the short-wave scale or other indication appearing in the apertures. Instead of the short-wave and gramophone positions being inscribed upon the name indicator, they can be shown on an extension of the mask 81 and rendered visible as the mechanism 18 is operated. When a drum type indicator is employed, the extension of the scale plate permits of a smaller drum being employed. Specifications 414,416, 428,139, and 474,923 are referred to.
