Abstract

495,189. Garages. WHITTON, F. C., and JONES, E. T. April 6, 1937, Nos. 9690 and 14012. [Class 20 (i)] A parking or storing structure for vehicles comprises a number of pairs of interconnected lift shafts 4 arranged in line or side by side each lift shaft accommodating a lift having a number of superposed compartments, and the interconnected lifts being so disposed that with either in the uppermost position only one compartment of the system will be at loading or unloading level. The lifts are interconnected in pairs by cables 5 which extend beside the top compartments of the lifts so that, when the lifts are in their uppermost position, a vehicle may be rim out from the top compartment of either of the lifts, directly on to a floor 8 of a servicing department. Covers 9 are provided for the lift shafts. The compartments in the lift may constitute lock-up garages and may have trap doors in the floors. The vehicles may enter the lifts through apertures 10, from a manceuvring space 3, or opposite' apertures may be formed in each lift shaft so that vehicles may proceed straight through. The lift shafts may be erected entirely above ground to avoid making pits, ramps being provided for leading the vehicles to the loading position, or for conducting the vehicles from the unloading position. Various arrangements of the lift shafts are described and shown. In one arrangement, two lifts in immediately juxtaposed shafts may be interconnected with a similar pair of lifts by cables, a manceuvring ground being provided between the two pairs of lifts. In another arrangement, lifts in successive juxtaposed pairs are connected by cables, one to a preceding lift, and one to a following lift, manoeuvring ground being provided between the successive pairs of lifts. The lifts may all be juxtaposed in line, and interconnected in successive pairs. In a further arrangement, the lifts may be disposed in two juxtaposed lines, coupled in pairs abreast. Blocks of superposed, stationary compartments may be positioned between the lifts to receive vehicles run out from the lifts, in order to increase the storage capacity of the structure.
